What is taupe and why should you consider it in your next room design?
Taupe is a beautiful deep, gray brown color that can have warm or cool undertones. This makes it a great moody and elegant, yet still neutral color that can easily be incorporated into any room in the home.
In my home, I’ve found that using taupe has brought a lot more warmth and depth, while also creating a perfect backdrop for decorations that I rotate in and out from one season to the next. Let’s take a look at how you can use it in your own home!
Where should you use taupe paint colors in your home?
Kitchens
In the kitchen, taupe paint colors provide a neutral and elegant base to compliment several types of countertops, appliances, and hardware (although I’ve found brass and gold accents to look especially great!).
Below, you can see I’ve painted my kitchen cabinets Shiitake by Sherwin Williams and I’ve really enjoyed the calm, inviting atmosphere that it has created. I’ve also found that it hides stains and everyday wear and tear better compared to lighter colors, making it ideal for families that enjoy spending a lot of time in the kitchen.
Living Rooms
In a living room, you can choose to paint all the walls taupe, just the trim, or just the bookcases like I did here!
I used Alabaster by Sherwin Williams on all the walls and Backdrop by Sherwin Williams for the bookcases to create a nice contrast. I love the way the darker taupe on the bookcases define the space around it as its own and create a cozy space for movie nights and family gatherings.
Bedrooms
Taupe is perfect for bedrooms as it creates a cozy and calm atmosphere to help you unwind at the end of the day. It also feels timeless and versatile which is great for when you’re switching out bedding and decorative pieces in a space.
I’ve used it in two guest bedrooms (Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams), so far, and plan on using it in my primary bedroom next (Either Weimaraner by Benjamin Moore or Driftwood by Benjamin Moore)!
Bathrooms
Bathrooms can oftentimes feel very cold with tile, but bringing in warmer accents either through paint, wood tones, or other decor can make them feel more organic, earthy and inviting. Below are some examples of spaces that have done just that!
